Meet Breto

From a young age in my hometown of Artemisa, Cuba, I had a deep passion for painting. Growing up in a small town, opportunities for formal art education were limited, and only selected children were chosen to attend the Escuela Vocacional de Arte. At the age of ten, my family missed the audition deadline, which was held fifty miles away. However, my grandfather, Renato Breto, took me to the school, where they allowed me to audition despite the fact that all spots had been filled.

Breto’s Gallery

During the audition, I completed a pencil drawing, a watercolor painting, and a still life composition (naturaleza muerta). The instructors were impressed with my work, and made an exception and admitted me that same day. This opportunity allowed me to attend the prestigious school as a boarding student for three years, where I studied sculpture, engraving, and painting.

After completing my studies at the Escuela Vocacional de Arte, I auditioned for the Escuela de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, where I majored in painting and earned a Bachelor’s degree as a Professor of Drawing and Painting in 1987. I continued to teach painting for several years before making the difficult decision to flee Cuba in search of freedom.

My journey took me to Guantanamo Bay, where I spent ten months working inside the general’s military base from US. During my time there, I created numerous paintings, including portraits of military families and works depicting the refugees housed at the base.

Experience

My Artistic Style

After arriving in the United States, I transitioned into the sign business, where I applied my artistic skills to designing signage for new commercial businesses. However, my love for capturing moments through art never wavered. After attending several events, a venue manager invited me to paint at a wedding. I enjoyed capturing this special moment for this couple with my painting and would love to capture yours.

My artistic style is impressionistic, focusing on light, shadow, and the overall ambiance of a scene. I would be honored to capture the special moments of your life through my painting.
